A CHARITY has called for Welsh women to face up to "embarrassment" about gynaecological health as new charity survey reveals a lack of knowledge among women in the UK.
More than a third of women surveyed in Wales failed to name a single type of gynaecological cancer, and just a third said they felt confident that they were well informed about gynaecological health issues, according to a survey by women’s cancer research charity, The Eve Appeal.
More than half said they have a problem using words like vagina, and a quarter resorting to using code names such as ‘lady parts’ or ‘women’s bits’ to discuss gynaecological health.
Almost a quarter of women in Wales surveyed said they found it difficult to talk to their GPs about gynaecological health concerns, and one in five admitted that they had avoided going to the doctors altogether with gynaecological issues due to embarrassment. Almost one in four women from the region couldn’t name a symptom of any type of gynaecological cancer.
