A NINE-YEAR-OLD from Newport tackled a nerve-wracking walk across the Transporter Bridge at the weekend to raise funds for St David’s Hospice Care.

Alena Griffiths, who goes to St Joseph’s Primary School in Newport, previously raised £475 for the charity when she had 19 inches cut off her hair two years ago.

The schoolgirl wanted to do the same again, but her hair was not long enough so her and her mum decided to tackle Newport’s iconic 74-metre high transporter bridge.

The pair climbed 277 steps before making the crossing on Saturday, August 23 with six other friends and volunteers.

Ms Griffiths, who works for St David’s Hospice, is now gearing up to take a zipwire from the bridge.
