UPDATE Sunday 1.52pm: A MAN who was struck by an empty train in Newport on Friday night has died, the Argus can confirm.

British Transport Police (BTP) told the Argus that their officers attended the line "close to Newport railway station" after reports that a man had been struck by a train.

The report was first made to police at 10.49pm and is not being treated as suspicious, said a BTP spokeswoman.

Paramedics also attended but the man, who has not yet been named, was pronounced dead at the scene.

"A file is being prepared for the coroner," said the spokeswoman.

The train was an empty stock service but would have had a driver, she said.

A MAN was hit by a train last night (Friday) in Newport.

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman said they were called at 10.50pm to reports of a man being hit by a train.

They attended with a rapid response vehicle, a doctor and a hazardous area response team.

He said: “We were stood down by the police and we did not convey anyone to hospital.”

National Rail and First Great Western train services both tweeted that trains were unable to run between Newport and Cardiff Central in either direction.

National Rail said two hour delays were expected until 1.30am and replacement buses were put on for stranded passengers.

Trains began running again at around 1.50am.

Services affected included First Great Western between Portsmouth Harbour and Cardiff Central, London Paddington and Swansea.

The man has not yet been named.

Eye witnesses described seeing several emergency service vehicles on the Cardiff Road bridge in Newport.
