A PILL resident has set up a monthly litter-pick group to tackle the problem of fly tipping in the city after 50 bags of rubbish were collected in just three hours.

The regular litter pick was set up by resident Paul Murphy, 41, just last month after he became frustrated with the “ongoing” problem of people dumping rubbish.

Last month 30 residents collected 50 bags of rubbish in just three hours and now Mr Murphy plans to make the litter pick a regular thing to stay on top of the problem.

“There are a lot of people dumping rubbish down there (Pill),” the cleaner at Newport City Council said.

“We held a litter pick on August 12 and collected 50 bags in three hours.

“People are seeing rubbish being dumped and there is more and more every day.

“It is all around by ASDA in Pill – that is used as a dumping ground and people have started nicking bins from around Pill.”

Mr Murphy pointed out many people believe it is solely a council responsibility, but said the council cannot expected to “keep going back and forth” and said the community should work together. He hopes the litter pick will get sponsors to make it a regular event.

The next litter pick starts at Pill Mill on October 27 from 11am. To sponsor the group call Mr Murphy on 07775449683.
