RESIDENTS have spoken of their shock after a car crashed into parked vehicles before ploughing into a wall outside a house this morning.

Azhal Alam, 50, was fast asleep when the car smashed into the low garden wall of his house inches from his front room at around 5.55am.

Neighbours were woken by a loud bang "like a bomb going off" and a car alarm in Corporation Road, Newport.

The driver is believed to have collided with several parked cars on either side of the road.

Police have arrested a 21-year-old on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking and drink driving.

Mr Alam told the Argus his parked Mercedes car had been damaged in the collision.

The former taxi driver said: “It’s quite a busy road. People are walking up and down.

“It hit one car, then my car and then went through the wall.”

Witnesses told how several police vehicles turned up and a man was arrested minutes later.

Richard Garner, 59, of Corporation Road, said: “There was a loud bang. It was like a bomb going off. There was glass everywhere.”

Fashion student Benish Shah, 19, said: “I was shocked. I thought it had hit my dad’s car.

“We were sleeping and I heard a bang. Next thing I heard the alarm going off.”

Her sister Haifa, 17, said: “I woke up and ran outside to see. It could have been our house.”

A Gwent Police spokesman said: “A car collided with a property on Corporation Road, Newport, at about 5.55am this morning.

“A 21-year-old man was arrested shortly after and close by.

“He was arrested on suspicion of aggravated taking, driving away and driving with alcohol above the legal limit.

“There were no injuries. Enquiries are ongoing .”

A CAR ploughed through a wall outside a house in Newport, crashing into cars parked nearby this morning.

Taxi driver Azhal Alam, 50, said 'several' cars were damaged before the car, he described as a 'VW Beetle' crashed through his garden wall on Corporation Road.

Mr Alam said he understands the driver was arrested by police minutes after the crash.
