Motorbike nuisance

The police, wardens and ward councillors have been inundated with calls from residents driven to distraction by the noise, or concerned that there is a serious accident about to happen.

In the wrong hands these machines are potential killers. They were not designed to be driven through housing estates and alleyways.

The police are taking the problem seriously and have the full backing of the ward councillors.

Be warned, any motorbike being used inappropriately, dangerously or where they shouldn't be will be confiscated. The owners will have to pay a hefty amount to have them returned or they will be destroyed.

NASH COLLEGE OPEN DAY: Wednesday, March 7, is part of National College Week. All roads lead to the open day at Coleg Gwent Newport campus, Nash Road. (Just off the SDR near the Aldi roundabout).

The college opens its doors to everyone. This is a fantastic opportunity to meet the staff and look at the excellent facilities the college has to offer. Did you know that the college offers hundreds of full- and part-time courses, many of which can be tailored to the individual?

The college is open from 11am to 7pm, so you never know, what starts as a visit out of curiosity could end up in a new career.

NEWPORT CORINTHIANS AFC: The Coronation Park-based Corinthians AFC are, as always, doing what they and our other sports clubs do best - keeping our youngsters out of mischief by encouraging them to get involved in sport.

This time they are looking for young girls between the ages of six and12 to join their girls' football section.

Girls' football is every bit as exciting and skilful as the male version, and a fast-growing sport. Further details are available from Christine Williams on 761281 A DATE FOR YOUR DIARY: The not-to-be-missed Corinthians Football Festival will be held on May 13 at Coronation Park.

This feast of fun football and family entertainment will have something for everyone.

The club are always looking for volunteers to help behind the scenes.

Last year I asked them what I could do to help, assuming that I could referee a match or run a line, but they decided my talent and fitness levels were best suited to walking around with a black bag picking up litter!

Apparently I did the job so well last year that I am in the litter picking team again this year.

FAB FOUR PRODUCTIONS: The Fab Four Fantastic Fund- Raisers lurking at the Orb Club have threatened me with some severe personal antisocial behaviour and fined me ten quid's worth of raffle tickets for omitting the actual date of their next fundraising spectacular.

When this lot raise money for charity they mean business. Here it is, March 2, 2007, a charity spectacular in aid of the Nevill Hall Children's Centre. Entertainment will be provided by top band Scene It. Tickets are a bargain £3 and can be booked in advance by ringing the club on 762225. Oops, almost forgot, it starts at 8pm.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, COMMUNITY ACTION: Congratulations to the Lliswerry youngsters who are in the process of making their very own documentary about the causes and effects of anti-social behaviour.

Under the guidance of the city council arts development team and youth services and the Yell Project (Young Empowered Lliswerry Leaders) youth workers the children are making a short film aimed at tackling the problems of antisocial behaviour across our city.

The project is based at the MABCA office and the children are aged between ten and 14.

Having spent a short time with the kids, it is great to see that they are as concerned about the effect of antisocial behaviour as the rest of us and are prepared to do something about it.

Well done to all the youth workers who have motivated them. It is hoped that when completed their film will get a well-deserved VIP viewing in the Riverside theatre.
