ALFIE Hillman’s second birthday will be a really special one for him and his family.

For the youngster from Ebbw Vale, who was born prematurely with an incredibly rare genetic condition, was not expected to live beyond a matter of minutes.

At the time of his birth his parents Shane Hillman and Sharron Swales say they were told their baby would most likely pass away the same day.

But after his very difficult start the little tot has proved he is a fighter. It is believed he is the only child in Wales to be suffering from the condition he has.

He spent time in an incubator, then spent two weeks at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, before being transferred to the Royal Gwent in Newport where he remained for three months. He needed oxygen for the first eight months of his life.

He remains small for his age, but, beyond all expectations, he is thriving.

And that is just the most fantastic news for the whole family.

Of course there are still concerns about Alfie’s health and he is still making regular trips to hospital.

But at the moment he is healthy and active and a very typical toddler.

Alfie’s parents are determined to let as many people as possible know about their son’s progress if only to help support others going through similar situations, which is a generous gesture.

We wish Alfie a very happy second birthday.
