South Wales Fire Service has been unable to confirm the cause of a fire at the Docks Way recycling site.

Firefighters used three water ladders and two water bowsers to extinguish the blaze at around 10.30am this morning.

The fire service had been tackling the blaze, where approximately 50 tonnes of waste was alight at the 200 tonne waste site, after they were first called to the scene at 5.19pm last night.

A spokeswoman from Newport City Council said that the Household Waste Recycling Centre, which is on the same site, has now reopened.

She added that it was expected some residents in Newport may experience a short delay in the collection of their waste, but that it should still be left outside and that the centre will resume normal services shortly.

FIREFIGHTERS have put out a fire at a 200 tonne waste site in Newport.

The fire at the recycling site on Docks Way was extinguished by a crew from Duffryn at around 10.30am this morning. Approximately 50 tonnes of waste was alight.

A spokeswoman for the South Wales Fire and Rescue service said the cause of the fire is not yet known.

A spokesman for Newport City Council said that it is expected that some residents in Newport may experience a short delay in the collection of their waste, but the centre will resume normal services shortly. He added that the location of the station is remote from public buildings and there is no considered threat to the public’s health and safety.

A SPOKESMAN for Newport City Council confirmed that the Household Waste Recycling Centre at Docks Way is now closed until further notice.

ON site contractors are now clearing large amounts of waste from the site at Docks Way in Newport. A crew from Duffryn is relieving the crew from Whitchurch and is continuing to damp down hot spots.

FIREFIGHTERS are still at the scene of a fire at on Docks Way in Newport. A spokeswoman said that seven firefighters from Whitchurch are still at the scene with a water bowser.

FIREFIGHTERS are currently battling a fire at a 200 tonne waste site in Newport.

Four crews were called to the fire at a waste building at the Household Waste and Recycling Centre on Docks Way, Newport, at 5.19pm this evening.

Gwyn Jones, who manages the site on behalf of owners Newport City Council, said the building holds around 200 tonnes of waste. The last fire at the site was around two years ago.

Crews of firefighters from Cwmbran, Barry, Roath and Cardiff Central attended.

Manager Mr Jones said firefighters have said it is not yet known what caused the fire.

Firefighters and water carriers are still fighting the blaze.
