A MEGABUS window was smashed by nearby scaffolding as it drove through Newport on Thursday.

The incident happened on the Queensway at around 5pm as the bus was travelling from London to Swansea.

Emergency services were called to the scene and treated people for minor injuries.

Matthew Wilkinson, who was on the bus at the time, said "Nobody was harmed and the driver dealt with it capably and professionally."

He said that the megabus has been "smashed up" by the collision.

A South Wales Ambulance Service spokesman confirmed that a rapid response vehicle and emergency ambulance attended the scene at around 5.33pm.

A number of people took to twitter after the collision.

Elen Wyn said: "My son just had a lucky escape as scaffolding ripped thru Megabus windows in Newport this afternoon. "

Lucy Chester said: "#megabus Newport scaffolding accident. Some girl's mac got smashed when the pole went through the window and hit it."

A spokeswoman for megabus.com said: "One of our vehicles operating between London and Swansea was involved in an incident this afternoon in which it struck some scaffolding in Newport at around 5pm.

"Our first thoughts are for the well-being of those involved.

"We believe one customer was treated in hospital for a minor injury following the incident.

"A replacement coach was sent to allow passengers to continue their journeys.

"Safety is our absolute priority and we will carry out an investigation into the cause of the incident."

This isn't the first time this has happened in this area:

In March, three people were taken to hospital after a piece of scaffolding smashed through the top floor windows of the double decker bus they were on as it travelled along Queensway in Newport.
