THE itinerary for next week’s royal visit to Gwent has been announced.

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall will visit a listed garden, open a new winery at a vineyard and meet world-renowned husband and wife fashion designers at their studio on July 9.

Their visit to the county is part of a week-long stay in Wales celebrating Welsh enterprise and community.

The Prince of Wales will visit High Glannau Manor and tour its listed arts and crafts garden in Lydart, near Monmouth.

High Glannau Manor is an important arts and crafts house set in 12 acres of gardens designed by H. Avray Tipping in 1922. Tipping was the architectural editor of Country Life Magazine from 1907 until his death in 1933, and worked on a variety of notable gardens including those at Chequers, Mathern Palace and Wyndcliffe Court. The gardens are currently being restored to their former glory, retaining many of their original features including formal terraces, an octagaonal pool, the glasshouse and pergola.

The manor and its gardens are owned by Helena Gerrish who has written a book on Edwardian Country Life and Avray Tipping, and regularly lectures horticultural societies on the Manor’s celebrated previous owner.

The Duchess of Cornwall, who is president of the United Kingdom Vineyards Association, will tour Ancre Hill vineyard meeting staff and supporters before officially opening the new winery in Monmouth.

The family-run four-acre vineyard grows Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Albarino and has won many international awards, including the Bollicine de Mondo for the best sparkling wine in the world.

A new state-of-the-art winery was completed in 2015. The theme of the building is sustainability and carbon neutrality. It is believed to be one of the world’s largest straw bale buildings at 3,800 cubic metres, designed for thermal and humidity control. The winery can process and store up to 100,000 bottles.

The Royal Couple will travel to Abergavenny to visit the studio of fashion designers Charles and Patricia Lester where they will learn about the unique processes they apply to their creations.

The Lester’s have been creating unique, hand-made dresses, accessories, tapestries and other items for 50 years.

During their visit Their Royal Highnesses will have the chance to view some of the intricate craftsmanship involved in the creation of their pieces.

The Prince of Wales will tour General Dynamics UK Limited in Oakdale where he will watch demonstrations and view some of the equipment made by the defence and aerospace manufacturer.

A Clarence House spokesperson said: “The Prince and The Duchess always enjoy their annual summer visit to Wales.”

They are very much looking forward to engaging with communities in many different parts of the country, and to seeing the rich variety of Welsh enterprise.”
