CELEBRATING thirteen years, the annual Caerleon Festival, which brings a mixture of the arts to Gwent, enjoyed continued success at the weekend.

The two-week festival, combining music, poetry and performing arts, saw many weekend acts sell out.

The event, which kicked off on Friday, will continue to dazzle audiences with performances, including the Morriston Orpheus Choir and appearances by Carol Anne Duffy until July 13.

Festival secretary Catherine Davidson said the event was going “very well”.

“Friday night was hugely successful,” she said.

“We had around 100 to 150 people turn out to see Pieces of Mind play at the Bell Inn, and the Comic Verse has over 100 people here.

“Wales Comic Verse is poetry, and this year we have over 100 entries from writers in the community.”

“It’s been very very successful.”

Despite some of the heavy downpours over the weekend, visitors made the most of sunny spells, enjoying performances outside and in marquees.

Shows included literature on the lawn, Between the Crosses — a one man play — and festival songs of praise.

Still to come over the next week are performances by classic country, rock and blues band The Fortunate Few, and Shakespeare’s Henry V.

The event is run by volunteers, and more sponsors are urgently needed to continue to fund the vent.
