A “CONTROLLING” boyfriend who forced his teenage partner to slash her own wrist and torso leaving her with a “nasty” 6cm cut has been jailed.

Johnny Flynn, 23, put a kitchen knife into the frightened girl’s hand and made her cut the bottom half of her arm as well as her chest, a court heard.

The 17-year-old was left with recurring nightmares and said she thought she was going to die, Newport Crown Court heard.

Julian Greenwood, prosecuting, told the court how the pair returned from a 21st birthday party in Newport when he started to hit her.

The abusive partner grabbed her by the hair, forced her into a door and also began to strangle her, the court heard on Friday.

The attack on May 2 only stopped because her grandparents turned up, Mr Greenwood said.

Flynn told the girl to act as if everything was all right but she raised the alarm, the court was told.

The “sustained” attack left her with a “nasty” 6cm cut on her breast, a 2cm cut on the wrist and a 3cm bruise on the neck, the court heard.

The girl said in an impact statement: “He had complete control over me.

“I was scared.”

Newport judge David Miller jailed him for two years and imposed a restraining order preventing him from contacting his former partner.

Judge Miller said: “I am in no doubt at all that had it not been for the return of her grandparents the attack would have continued with further attack and injury.”

Flynn of Midway House, Chepstow, pleaded guilty to one count of wounding and one charge of criminal damage after damaging her mobile phone during the assault.

Cora Sorensen, who was defending Flynn, said that her client had not wanted to go to the party, which was attended by members of the girl’s family, and some guests were “hostile” towards him.

The solicitor advocate acknowledged the assault had been a “frightening experience” but stressed Flynn had already served the equivalent of six months in custody.

Judge Miller imposed a two-year jail term for the assault but there was no separate penalty for the criminal damage.

He also ordered Flynn to pay a £900 criminal charge and a £100 victim surcharge.

Investigating officer Det Con Kay Gladwin, said after the hearing: “This was a particularly nasty and violent attack on a young woman who has shown bravery and resolve in coming forward.

“I would urge anyone who is in an abusive relationship to seek support and report any incidents of domestic violence.

"We can and do support victims through and beyond any court process so they can get on with their lives without the fear of violence or abuse.”
