AN Abergavenny garage sales assistant has been given an eight month suspended sentence for fraud charges after he skimmed customers' cards while they were in the shop.

29-year-old Robert Morgan, of Hereford Road, pleaded guilty to all charges on July 8 and appeared at Cardiff Crown Court this morning for sentence.

He was charged with nine counts of fraud, one count on making counterfeit currency with intent, one count of making counterfeit currency notes and one count of possession of articles for use in fraud.

He was also charged with a separate indictment of possession a prohibited weapon, a 1800 kilovolt stun gun capable of incapacity.

He pleaded guilty to all charges.

Whilst working as a sales assistant at an Abergavenny garage on Hereford Road, Morgan skimmed seven different customers' cards.

A police search of his home in September last year found he had a card reader, packs of blank cards, cut up strips of bank notes, two fake £10 notes and a stun gun.

Prosecutor James Wilson said one of the victims whose card was skimmed said he felt his "privacy was violated".

But Morgan's defence said it was an unusual case since he never actually used the card details to make money.

But prosecution Mr Wilson said in police interview Morgan admitted he was planning to use the details.

Judge David Wynn Morgan sentenced Morgan to eight months for the fraud counts, six months for the counterfeit currency counts, right months for possessing the articles for fraud and eight months for the stun gun. All sentences are to run concurrently and are suspended for two years.

Morgan was also ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work.
