NEWPORT Civic Society has featured on the front cover of the Civic Trust Cymru Bulletin for its work helping set up a First World War memorial.

The magazine, designed to create stronger links between civic societies in Wales, featured Newport in its summer issue.

An article discusses Chairman Rev Canon Andrew Willie stepping down saying he led a successful 12 months when a diorama of medieval Newport was commissioned, which can now be viewed in the foyer of Newport City Campus at the University of South Wales.

It continues: “Another big project undertaken in the last year was the installation of a new memorial and repair and enhancement of an existing plaque to mark the loss of life from the Monmouthshire Regiment at the battle of Frezenberg Ridge.

"The centenary of what is thought to be the largest single loss of life from Newport was on 8th May and marked by a service at the memorials. The Centenary memorial is alongside the Usk near the former Maltings building. This includes eight may trees to represent the date of the battle and reinstates a tradition which dates back to a sadly long lost memorial which used to be in Belle Vue Park.

"Soil from Frezenberg was collected by Newport Civic Society member John Briggs and this was sprinkled at the foot of the trees during the service.”

Nick Webb is the new chairman of the civic society. Mr Webb said: “We have had a strong year of projects and this has set the bar high for what we will look to do next. At my first meeting as Chairman I took the opportunity to review the original components of the Society’s constitution which dates back to 1974. I am keen that we remain true to these objectives while producing events, reports and projects which are relevant to our modern, fast-evolving city.”
