The best thing a smoker can do for their health is to quit completely.

I was interested to hear therefore that evidence released by Public Health England shows using e-cigarettes, in the short term, poses a lower risk to health than smoking and has the potential to help smokers quit.

Their findings reveal that E-cigarettes are 95% less harmful than tobacco and could be prescribed on the NHS in future to help smokers quit.

Experts who have compiled the report for Public Health England say "vaping" could be a "game changer" for persuading people to quit cigarettes.

They also say there is no evidence they give children a "gateway" into smoking.

The Conservative Government at Westminster is regulating these products to make sure they are even safer and want to see local stop smoking services welcoming people wishing to use e-cigarettes to support their quit attempts.

Although they recognise the E-cigarettes may help adults to quit, they still want to protect children from the dangers of nicotine, which is why they have made it illegal for under 18s to buy them.

The Welsh Government has previously announced that it plans to ban the use of e-cigarettes in enclosed spaces.

Organisations such as Ash Wales, Cancer Research and Tenovus, have all expressed concern that the provisions in the Bill will have an adverse impact on public health and undermine efforts to reduce smoking rates in Wales.

As these organisations have indicated, there was previously only limited research undertaken in relation to the potential adverse health impacts of electronic cigarettes.

This report by Public Health England presents strong and compelling evidence that electronic cigarettes are an effective smoking cessation tool.

E-cigarettes are increasingly popular and are now used by 2.6 million adults in Britain.

E-cigarettes are not completely risk-free but when compared to smoking, it is clear they carry just a fraction of the potential harm.

We need to take steps to ensure people give up smoking and do not take up smoking in the first place.

This is important if people are to live longer, healthier lives.

I believe the Welsh Government should seriously consider this new evidence presented by Public Health England and reconsider its plans to ban e-cigarettes as a matter of urgency.
