TWO Only Fools and Horses fans from Newport are dressing up as Batman and Robin and driving a three-wheeled van across some of the Europe’s most iconic race tracks to raise money for charity.

John O’Sullivan, 49, owner of Promotive, a BMW and Mini specialist in Rogerstone, and his friend, Paul Thomas, also 49, set off on their mammoth 2,000 mile journey yesterday.

They will pass through England, France, Germany and Belgium in the coming days and hope to raise £2,000 for BEN, the UK’s only charity for past and present employees in the automotive and related industries.

In the process, they will take in Silverstone, the Reims-Gueux circuit, the Nurburgring and the Spa Francorchamps.

Inspired by Del and Rodney’s fancy dress sojourns, the pair have spent the past few months painstakingly converting a Morris Miner into a three-wheel van in preparation for the event.

The challenge is in aid of bangers4ben 2015, where 30 teams from across the UK are buying a car for under £750, customising the car, and then selling it on at auction.

Mr O’Sullivan, whose been involved in the motor trade business for 30 years, said: “We couldn’t go out and buy a Ferrari and do it. The car’s not been on the road for 20 odd years, it looks nice.

“I’ve never driven a three-wheeler In my life, it’s a real baptism of fire. It’s a little bit hairy going around corners and we are both not small guys.

“To make it a bit more fun, we're doing it in fancy dress. The two came along quite nicely."
