HUNDREDS attended a march through Newport city centre today commemorating the anniversary of an Islamic martyr who died more than 1,300 years ago.

The annual march marks the death of Mohammad’s grandson, Imam Hussain and 72 of his family who were killed in Karbala in what is now Iraq at the hands of the tyrant Yazid.

Yesterday’s was the 33rd to be held through Newport and was organised by the Islamic Society of Wales.

The march started from the Islamic Society of Wales building in Victoria Road, through Newport city centre and then back up Stow Hill.

The march passed off peacefully.

Last year the event was disrupted by members of the far right National Front group and attended by police after two men carrying flags marked with the group’s insignia sought to enter the crowds of hundreds from a side street.
