AN evening of events celebrating the Chartists’ legacy in Newport will be held in the city for the first time next month.

The Celebrating Chartism Light & Sound event runs from 4pm until 7pm on Saturday, March 5 and will stop off at Westgate Square, John Frost Square and the Riverfront Theatre and Arts Centre.

This event, partly organised by Newport Live, includes dance, drama, music and storytelling performances along the route, culminating in large projections and music at 6.30pm outside the Riverfront.

The event’s planners, Fizzi Events, have been working with Pontypool teenager, Megan Holborn, 14, who attends the Riverfront’s connections drama project.

Megan got involved as she’s passionate about young people’s role in the community and wanted to highlight the impact that the Chartists have had on shaping democracy.

She devised her own Chartist dance movements, including a dramatic release from chains, and will be donning a bird costume specially made for the event.

Attendees are encouraged to take part in lantern making from 3pm and to join the story route from 4pm at Westgate Square, hearing the story of Chartist Jack in West Square at 4.30pm.

Susannah Stonehouse, events manager said: "The late afternoon is perfect for all ages to come out and see and hear about the history of their city and the future that it heralds.

“When dusk falls there will be a great opportunity to come down to The Red Wave and watch the light and sound show.”
