TEAM GB's cyclists will probably bring home more medals from next month's Rio Olympics than any other group of British competitors.

Newport is playing host to many of them this week as their pre-Olympic training camp takes place at the city's velodrome.

It is a feather in the cap for the city.

What a shame, then, that the management and staff of Newport Live - the charitable trust that runs the city's leisure facilities including the velodrome - have had to deal with yet another influx of travellers to the International Sports Village site at Spytty.

Earlier this year, travellers appeared in the car park that serves the site's swimming pool and tennis centre and the FAW's Dragon Park.

Last week they set up camp next to the velodrome, and now they are in the Newport Stadium car park.

On each occasion, Newport Live's staff have suffered verbal abuse and threats of violence as they have attempted to protect the site.

Travellers like those who have set up at the Sports Village on these occasions give their entire community a bad name.

The cost of taking legal action to remove them, and of cleaning up the horrendous mess left behind once they have gone, is huge. And it is worth pointing out again that Newport Live is a charity.

The facilities at the Sports Village are the envy of many other towns and cities.

More needs to be done by all relevant authorities, including the police, to protect them.
