TRAINSPOTTERS expecting to see a steam engine in Newport today were left frustrated after delays and another train blocked their views.

The train fans waited for over an hour a half for the steam locomotive Bulleid Light Pacific, after an incident in Cardiff led to severe delays.

And, when it finally arrived it only stopped for a couple of minutes and then left at the same time as another train, blocking the views of many eager spectators.

Rail services between Newport and Cardiff had been put on hold when a train hit a man close to Cardiff Central Station.

A spokeswoman from the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said that he suffered injuries to his leg and was taken to University Hospital of Wales.

Around 50 people were left waiting for the steam engine in Newport Train Station at 2pm, when it was meant to arrive.

It meant only a few stayed until it arrived around 3.30pm.

Ruby Sparks, from Lliswerry, was among them. She said: "It's a little bit disappointing that it's late. We have been on a steam train before, it was a couple of years before and I really liked it."

When it eventually arrived the 11-year-old said that it was frustrating that it left at exactly the same time as another train, scuppering their only brief opportunity to see it.

Sasha Chivers, a 26-year-old carer from Malpas, added: “I was disappointed, I really thought it was going to be better than that.

“We have been here since 2pm and now it’s gone.

“We could barely see it because of the other train.”

Peter Wright, 67, a retiree from Cross Keys, was also at the station with his wife and two children.

He said: "We have had to pay £8 for the long stay car park. This was a special trip to see the steam train.

"Both of our children are very keen on trains. The children were really looking forward to seeing all the steam and hearing the whistle."
