MORE than 1,500 people turned up to witness Caerleon go back in time by 2,000 years this weekend.

Families and visitors were able to enjoy a variety of Roman re-enactments at Caerleon’s amphitheatre across Saturday and Sunday, organised by National Roman Legion Museum.

There was something for everyone across the weekend, as around 30 soldiers in full armour put on several displays of battle re-enactments, which included horses, as well as archery.

Not only could people watch the re-enactments, but they could also learn about life in Ancient Rome from various actors dressed as doctors, tradesmen and cooks.

And guests were not put off by the regular downpours on Sunday, as events and marketing officer for the National Roman Legion Museum Victoria Le Poidevin said the car parks were packed out.

She said: “We had a great day on Saturday and people really enjoyed themselves.

“It’s a Roman/Caerleon effort and there has been so much for people to do. People weren’t put off by the weather.

“There were activities for everyone and it was great to see adults and children getting involved.”

Performances from the soldiers took place twice a day on both days, along with ‘ancient games’ style sports where children could race each other on a blow up horse or rabbit.

A World War One encampment was also set up outside the amphitheatre displaying facts, figures and information.

Miss Le Poidevin said the most exciting part was when the Romans entered the amphitheatre before battling against one another.

“It was just amazing when around 30 soldiers came marching into the amphitheatre,” she said.

“Everyone looked so excited,” she added.
