A MUM says she fears someone could be hurt or killed unless action is taken after a car ploughed into a school fence for the second time this year.

The driver of a Land Rover mounted the kerb outside Usk Primary School in Monmouth Road at about 10pm on Sunday night, smashing into a traffic light and a fence directly outside the school gates.

Lela Pirouet - who lives nearby - said she had been told the driver got into another vehicle and left the scene, leaving the crashed Land Rover in the road.

Ms Pirouet said she is now seriously concerned for the safety of her son, who already attends the school, and daughter, who is due to start there this term.

“If this happened in the day someone would have been killed,” she said.

“There was a lady there walking her dog – if she had been a bit further down the road she could have been killed.”

Mrs Pirouet said this was the second time such a crash had occurred at the site, after another vehicle crashed into the same set of traffic lights earlier this year.

She said she hoped this would prompt the local authority into taking some form of action.

“They are going to have to do something,” she said.

“I have no idea what would make it safer.

“But I'd hope the council or highways department could do a risk assessment now to see what could be done.”

A Gwent Police spokesman confirmed they had been called to the incident, but could not confirm any further details. They did not say that anyone had been arrested or charged.

Anyone with any information about the crash can contact police on 101.

Information can also be reported anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or via crimestoppers.org.uk.

Monmouthshire County Council were contacted for comment.
