A CALDICOT woman has spoken of her disgust after finding live maggots in her Felix cat food bought from Morrisons.

Morrisons say they have taken the issue up with Felix and are currently investigating.

Purina, the producer of Felix, say they have taken the necessary steps to determine the incident doesn’t appear to be widespread.

Thirty-four-year-old Katie Powell says she received her Morrisons online delivery on Saturday August 20, at around 6pm. But when she was putting the food away, she noticed a fishy smell.

“I wondered what it was,” Mrs Powell said. “As soon as I opened the cat food, I found live maggots all over pouches that were leaking.

“It spilt onto the work surface, they were all over my kitchen worktop and on the floor.

“I was very disappointed and didn't expect to have maggots contaminating the cat food or my kitchen.”

Morrisons have said Mrs Powell has now received 20,000 points on her More card, equivalent a £20 voucher.

But Mrs Powell says she believes the incident could have been handled better.

“First of all they only offered us a £5 voucher,” she added.

“I find it farcical that I was offered a refund on the ‘box of maggots’ I had delivered to my house.

“We said we were not happy with the initial refund as I have had to clean the kitchen thoroughly and dispose of the maggots, not something I was expecting to do on a Saturday evening.

“Good job I also ordered three bottles of bleach.

“I thought it was pretty disgusting that the box was sent like this. From the supplier to the driver, I was very surprised that no one had picked up on the smell.”

Mrs Powell, who did her weekly £100 shop in Morrisons for over a year and a half, said that they have been shopping in another supermarket since the incident.

A Morrisons spokeswoman said: "We want offer our customers the best quality products, so we have taken this up with the supplier and they are currently investigating the issue. "We hope that Mrs Powell accepts our apology and the £20 voucher we have given her."

A spokeswoman from Purina, the producer of Felix, said: "As pet owners and pet lovers, Purina understands the concerns of the customer. Purina has stringent quality checks in place to make sure the product is properly prepared before leaving the factory.

"Naturally Purina is disappointed to hear about the consumer’s discovery and have taken the necessary quality assurance steps to determine this incident doesn’t appear to be widespread.

"To reduce the risk of any form of insect contamination Purina follows very stringent processes, which include regular audits and hygiene inspections."
