A COUPLE from Greenmeadow are organising a protest march in Cwmbran against the proposal to build a new prison.

Lorain Haynes, 52, and her disabled husband Victor, 48, live approximately 200 yards away from the site in Coleford Path.

They decided to launch a protest march after attending Wednesday night’s public meeting.

Mrs Haynes said: “I am organising this march because we have talked enough about the subject and it is now time for actions.

“I am extremely angry about this proposal, as is everybody else living in the area so I feel the best way to show our feelings is to get out on to the streets.”

After receiving positive feedback from several residents in Greenmeadow and St Dials about their plans, the couple hope to see at least 300 people attend.

Although a date and route for the march has not yet been fixed, they hope to finalise their arrangements in the next two weeks.

Mr Haynes, a retired sales representative, suffers from arthritis to his knees, hips and spine.

He said he was determined to attend the walk despite his disability.

“I might walk a bit slow but I will be at the march,” he said.

“I think the Ministry of Justice need their heads testing if they think this site is suitable for a prison.”

Anyone interested in joining the march is asked to contact Mrs Haynes via email at lorain.haynes@ntlworld.com.
