OFFICERS investigating the murder of the teenage mum-to-be are focussing on finding the murder weapon.

CCTV footage from across the city is being examined in a bid to find Ms Grender's killer and police are appealing for residents with private CCTV outside their homes in the Broadmead Park, Moorland Park and Pontfaen areas to contact them.

Officers remained in Broadmead Park yesterday continuing their search of the area, including the reen running through the estate.

Four officers from South Wales Police's specialist search unit conducted a painstaking fingertip search on their hands and knees as they scoured a reen close to Miss Grender's house. A sniffer dog was also on scene at the flat where she died.

A Gwent Police spokeswoman said finding the murder weapon, believed to be a knife, was the priority.

Det Supt Geoff Ronayne, who is leading the investigation, said: "As is normal with underwater searches we have sought mutual aid from a neighbouring force and a team of 25 Gwent and South Wales Police officers who are specially trained for searches of this kind.

We have ongoing forensic investigations which will continue for the foreseeable future.

"We are hopeful that residents who have CCTV will come forward and let us examine it. We are also urging friends and associates to contact us with any information however small."

Late on Monday evening, two men found a screwdriver, which officers retrieved for forensic examination and during yesterday's search of the reen, a mobile found was recovered.

A Gwent Police spokeswoman said: "Searches are ongoing across the estate and items have been found, this is not unusual and each will have to be analysed to establish any significance, this will take some time."

Yesterday afternoon, a sniffer dog was sent into the flat as the hunt for evidence continued.

Neighbourhood officers and Community Safety Wardens continued patrolling the area yesterday and youth workers for the Lliswerry ward talked to teenagers in the area, offering advice and support and also trying to establish what happened.

Police distributed leaflets and are also using bluetooth technology appealing to residents in the local area for information.

Newport Superintendent Dave Johnson said: "I know there is strong feeling among the community about what has happened and understandably so, but what I would say is the best thing people can do to help is to contact police with information which will enable the investigative team to conduct their investigation."

Anyone with information should contact the major incident room on 01443 865562, the police switchboard on 01633 838111 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
