ISMAIL Yakubu today reveals the truth behind his goal against former club AFC Wimbledon... it was a total fluke.

The former Dons defender marked his return from injury with the opening goal in Newport’s thumping 4-1 win over the Londoners, their first ever triumph against Neal Ardley’s men.

Yakubu faced the ultimate baptism of fire as he was tasked with marking self proclaimed “Beast Mode,” striker Adebayo Akinfenwa, the 16-stone target man who is believed to be the strongest player in world football.

And County’s long-serving defender today admits his goal was as a result of trying to get a respite from Wimbledon’s man mountain.

“It was a very tough test to come up against him in your first game back, it was an absolute battle the entire day,” he said.

“If I was to compare our strength, I’d just about beat him!

“I’m joking of course, he’s the strongest I’ve ever played against and he was bench pressing me all afternoon.

“He’s great in the air, you can’t move him, if he gives you a tap on the shoulder you aren’t going anywhere for a few minutes.

“To be honest, with the goal, I was just trying to get respite from a little run-in I’d had with him a few minutes before when he poked me in the eye.

“When I went up for the corner I literally couldn’t see and I told Mark Byrne that, but fortunately the ball came onto my head and I shut my eyes and hoped for the best.

“I was cross eyed at that moment but I just saw enough of the shape of the ball to put it in the back of the net.”

With County now seven unbeaten in League Two, Yakubu admits expectations are rising at Rodney Parade following the poor start that saw the Exiles lose four on the spin.

“We are unbeaten in seven and we really want to keep going and creeping up the league,” he said.

“We can’t get complacent but we do have some momentum now and are focused on playing our game and believing in what we can achieve playing good football.

“We feel we can beat anyone, League Two never changes, generally it’s that sort of division and the way we are playing, few teams are going to want to meet us at the moment.”

Yakubu praised Swansea youngster Scott Tancock who impressed on his Exiles debut following a loan switch from the Liberty Stadium.

“Scott did brilliantly against really experienced strikers,” he said.

“He looked like a really good defender and I think he’s got a promising career ahead of him”
