CROSS Keys will hope that Jason Tovey can provide them with a passport to progress in the British and Irish Cup when he pulls the strings against Cornish Pirates tomorrow afternoon (kick-off 3pm), writes Chris Kirwan.

The 25-year-old Dragons fly-half played for the Pandy Park side in last weekend’s stunning late win in Bedford when he should have been on the bench against Stade Francais in the European Rugby Challenge Cup.

Tovey had left his passport in a pocket and it went through the wash, meaning he was unable to make the trip to Paris.

That meant he swapped places with Geraint Rhys Jones, who was an unused replacement at Stade Jean Bouin while Tovey wore 15 at Goldington Road.

He had been replaced by the time that Keys launched a stunning late Munster-esque move from their own territory to take the spoils.

Captain Leon Andrews crossed after 30 phases for a try that fly-half Dorian Jones converted for a 23-22 win that keeps their hopes of qualification from Pool Four well and truly alive.

Doncaster have won two games with bonus points but Keys and Bedford are both on six points while the Pirates are on two and desperately need to win tomorrow.

The last time the teams met was in the 2012 semi-finals of the tournament when Keys defended for their lives at the death for a terrific 20-16 triumph at Pandy Park.

It was a different story when they met at Mennaye Field in the group stages earlier that season when the Gwent side had already secured a home quarter-final.

Keys, who rested a number of players ahead of a derby with Newport and had enjoyed the Penzance hospitality the previous night, were thumped 30-3 with former Dragons wing Matt Evans crossing for a brace.

Just two players that featured for the Pandy Park outfit on that December afternoon return this weekend, centre Leon Andrews and lock Danny Hodge.

Tovey moves forward to fly-half to take the place of Dorian Jones, who was on Dragons duty last night, with Geraint Rhys Jones returning at 15.

Starts are given to loosehead Hugh Gustafson, hooker Darren Hughes, lock Scott Andrews and flanker Scott Matthews while popular prop Richard Cornock could make his return from a calf injury from the bench.

There has been a heavy Dragons influence in the tournament so far but 16 of the 22-man squad for Penzance are on Keys’ regular roster.

Doncaster host Bedford this afternoon in the pool’s other game.
