NEWPORT sprinter Katie-Jane Priest helped Wales under-20s to second place in the 4x100m relay at this week’s Welsh Athletics Outdoor International in Cardiff.

The annual international saw the Welsh youngsters go head-to-head with rivals from England North, England South and England Midlands.

Five Welsh athletes claimed event victories on a night of fierce competition with joint senior 100m record holder Hannah Brier storming to victory for Wales in the 200m.

Newport Harriers athlete Priest finished fifth in her 100m heat but then teamed up with Brier to claim second place in the 4x100m, just three hundredths of a second behind the England North quartet.

Other Welsh winners on the night were Tasia Stephens in the javelin, Adele Nicoll in the women’s shot, Georgina Outten in the women's 800m and Jonathan Tobin in the men’s mile.

Other notable Welsh performances included Jack Gooch setting a new personal best of 1:52:21 in the men’ 800m, Iori Moore finishing second in the men’s 200m in 21.83s and Jac Palmer second in the men’s hammer throw.

In the field, Richard Dangerfield was third in the men’s javelin with a best of 52.56m, Nathan Thomason was third in the shot put in 14.55m and Adrian Lawrence was second in the triple jump with 13.62m.

The final results saw England South claim victory with 104pts ahead of England Midlands on 101pts, England North on 94.5pts and Wales on 81pts.

The Welsh Athletics Outdoor International also hosted the 3,000m Championships for U15, U17, U20 and senior athletes.

The winners were: U15 girls Kiara Frizelle (Cardiff AAC) 10:23:62, U15 boys Luke Davies (Brecon AC) 9:30:73, U17 women Abbie Williams (Pembrokeshire Harriers) 10:20:25, U17 men Marinus Petersen (Pembrokeshire Harriers) 9:15:36, U20 women Heidi Davies (Brecon AC) 9:58:59, U20 men Christian Lovatt (Swansea Harriers) 8:47:45, U23 women Camilla Barnes (Worcester AC) 9:54:58 and senior men Chris Carpanini (Swansea Harriers) 8:41:42.
