GREAT Britain’s men’s team pursuit stars lit up Newport Velodrome with an unofficial world record in training for next month’s Olympic Games in Rio.

The quartet of Sir Bradley Wiggins, Ed Clancy, Steven Burke and Cardiff’s Owain Doull eclipsed the time of three minutes 51.659 seconds set by Team GB at London 2012.

Cheered on by a crowd of passionate cycling fans as they completed the 16-lap run, Wiggins and his teammates showed they are in perfect condition ahead of the Olympics.

Yesterday was all about trying to recreate the racing conditions riders will face in Rio, with the temperature inside the Newport venue ratcheted up to achieve maximum speeds.

And as the sweat poured off the members of the public at trackside, the British foursome ended the day in style.

However, as the time was achieved in a training run and not a competition, they will have to do it all again in Brazil if they want to get an official entry in the record books.

That means the current record, which is held by Clancy, Burke, Peter Kennaugh and another Cardiff rider, Geraint Thomas, still stands for now.

Team GB’s finest, including the likes of Mark Cavendish, Laura Trott and Abergavenny’s own Becky James, have been in Newport for training camps leading up to the Olympics.
