Newport residents far and wide are gearing up for one of the biggest games in Newport this century, taking place this weekend.

Newport County AFC are going head-to-head against Manchester United on Sunday, January 28. The game will be part of the FA Cup fourth round, taking place at Newport’s very own Rodney Parade.

Kick-off is at 4.30pm on Sunday, and lots of adoring fans will be heading to the Rodney Parade stadium while others will be watching it somewhere in town or in the comfort of their own home.

The Argus spoke to many around the town centre, and everyone has different opinions on who should (or will) win.

Two Newport County fans dressed in Newport County gear near the bus station said, “support County, innit”, which another fan agreed with by saying, “obviously Newport!”.

A Newport resident famous in the area joined the team at The Pot Café in Newport Arcade. Jack from Vibez Nightclub joined Angela Roberts, owner of The Pot Café and staff to chant “Up the County!”.

When asked who they would like to win, the Vibez owner said, “anyone but Manchester United”.

One resident of Newport said who he supports has depended on where he lives: “When I was a small boy, I supported Man United and my mum bought me all the football kit, the red and white.

“Then we lived in North London and I supported Tottenham because we lived near the Tottenham Hotspurs football ground.

“But now I live in Newport, there’s only one team I can support and that’s Newport.”

Two workers at Sports Direct on Commercial Street in Newport said they’re both supporting Newport County to win, with one being lucky enough to score tickets for the match at Rodney Parade: “I’ll be seeing it live” while his colleague will be “watching it from home”.

One supporter, visiting from Bristol, thinks the score might be “3 - 0” to Manchester.
