URC: Dragons sign Australian back Harry Wilson from Waratahs

The 23-year-old, who can also play in the back three, will arrive after completing the Super Rugby campaign with the Waratahs.

Wilson, whose father is former Australia captain and World Cup winner David, is 6ft 3ins and will provide a physical option at 13 along with up-and-coming Joe Westwood.

The Dragons are putting an emphasis on bulk in their recruitment drive after snapping up Tongan back rower Solomone Funaki for next season and South African winger Chris Hollis, who is on an initial short-term deal that is likely to become permanent.

“We’re really excited to bring Harry to Wales and to see the impact he can have in our environment,” said head coach Dai Flanagan.

“He is a great athlete and talented young centre, who can also operate in the wide channels. The fact he can play multiple positions will be a real asset to us.

“Harry arrives with Super Rugby experience and is a player with a big future. We’re looking forward to seeing him represent the Dragons.”

Following the retirement of Jack Dixon and with Sio Tomkinson and Max Clark set for the exit, Wilson will be a midfield option with captain Steff Hughes, Aneurin Owen, Harri Ackerman, Westwood and potentially Hollis.

The centre from Sydney made his Super Rugby debut last year and scored his first try in the Waratahs win against the Crusaders in March.

The Australia Under-20s international is relishing the move to experience European rugby.

“I’m excited at the prospect of becoming a Dragon and linking up with my new teammates this summer,” said Wilson.

“I’ve spoken to Dai Flanagan about the club’s vision and targets going forward and look forward to being a big part of a new look squad and testing myself in a new competition.

“It’s a big opportunity for me to move to Wales and a new challenge that I plan to fully embrace.

“Finally, thank you to my team-mates, the coaches, and fans at the Waratahs for their support over the last few seasons. I’ll be giving absolutely everything for a strong end to this Super Rugby season.”

The Dragons are set to confirm more signings in the coming days with Flanagan looking to add more power to his pack.

Experienced former Cardiff and Ospreys tighthead Dmitri Arhip is on a deal until the end of the campaign and the Wales-based Moldovan could be one of the recruits, with the head coaching saying he was eyeing “up to seven” new faces.
